DIY | Light-Up Letters / Marquee Letters
Have you seen these signs on YouTube, Instagram, Pintrest and more?
Do you want to make your own?
Well now you can!!
Recently, on a visit to Manchester I made myself one of these signs for my bedroom reading 'ALEX ALICE' and it looks FAB! Im so impressed with how it turned out. If you would like to make one yourself - carry on reading...
Okay so... What do you need?
(All links will be left at the bottom of the post)
♡ The letters of what you want to write (I got mine from hobby craft for £2 each which are made out of papier machè
♡ A craft knife
♡ A pencil and a sharpie (I used a light pink so it wouldn't be too visible when they are hung)
♡ Hanging pins
♡ A hammer
♡ A set of fairy lights (I got a set of 100 of eBay)
You could also use spray paint to change the colour of the letters, a spirit or laser level and small pegs to hang photos if you have excess lights and wire.
How to make your own light show...
For this section you will need your craft knife, lights, letters and sharpie
1. Firstly, use your craft knife to cut out the backs of the letters, leaving the sides and the front intact - this will allow you to put in the lights and also hide the excess wire between bulbs for extra neatness
This is when you could spray paint your letters should you wish
2. With your sharpie, mark small 'x's on the letters where you would like your lights to be (make sure that if you have two of the same letters that the positioning match)
3. Using your craft knife again, cut these small 'x's out making two small crossing lines for you lights to poke out of
4. Lay out your letters in the correct order and place the lights into the holes, make sure to take note of where would be best for the wire to pass between each letter; for example: between L and E, in my case, I had to make sure the wire ended at the bottom of the L at the right to make sure the minimum amount of wire was showing.
YOUR LIGHT ARE MADE!
Now for hanging...
For this you will need your finished letters and lights, hanging nails, hammer, a pencil and a level if you have one.
1. Using a pencil, draw a faint, straight line for where you want your letters to go
2. One by one, using your hanging nails and hammer, put in the requires amount of nails for each letter and hanging them as you go (this is where having a friend with you helps and makes things A LOT easier)
3. Plug them in and LIGHT 'EM UP!
Alternatively, you could put up a shelf for these or even just stand them up on a book shelf or cabinet.
Please send me pictures if you try this out or tag my on Instagram (@alexandraalice139)
I hope you liked this DIY post, I will definitely be doing more of these!
